Decorating My Front Porch for Fall

October 6, 2019 Leave a Comment

Fall is finally here and I couldn’t be more excited! I love everything about fall – the food, the colours, the comfy sweaters – and of course, decorating my front porch! I’ve been waiting patiently to start decorating my front porch for the change in season and by that I mean waiting for that first leaf to fall in order to justify me starting to decorate so early. I’m totally that neighbour when it comes to the holidays – always decorating way earlier than everyone else. But I figure if I’m going to spend the money and effort to decorate, I may as well have it out for as long as I can!

So keep reading to see how I decorated my front porch for fall and hopefully it will give you some ideas!

I really do believe that your front porch or entranceway should make you feel welcome when you come home and make you happy as you walk up your steps. It gives your home great curb appeal and makes it so inviting (still call me before you come over though!). It’s one of the first places I decorate when the seasons change and I love extending my holiday decor from the inside to out! So here are some of my tips for decorating a porch for the fall season!

Add a pop of colour with mums.

I absolutely adore mums! They are the ultimate fall flower and they add the perfect pop of colour on your front doorstep. Who can resist? I certainly can’t, as this year I bought five to place around the entranceway. I’m so in love with all the colours they come in, and you can’t really go wrong with any colour combo. I personally love mums placed on either side of the door. Aren’t they so pretty?

Aren’t those witch feet just the cutest?

Pick pretty pumpkins.

What’s a fall porch without pumpkins? As much as I love your traditional carving pumpkin, I’m absolutely obsessed with all the other varieties of pumpkins. The blue/green pumpkins are typically less perfect in shape, but I adore the colour! I love all the shapes and different textures in all the varieties – it’s hard to not want them all!

I also picked up some brighter, orange pumpkins too. And don’t forget the gourds! They add the perfect touch mixed in amongst the larger pumpkins.

Switch up your wreath.

No matter what season or holiday it is, I always have a wreath on my front door. I think it just makes your home so welcoming! Adding a wreath is probably the easiest way to dress up your door for the season. I bought this wreath last year and I love how it ties in with the corn stalks.

Add a mat.

Adding a seasonal mat is one of the simplest ways to change up your porch for the fall season, next to swapping out your wreath. This ‘boo’ mat I picked up this year at HomeSense. It’s so simple but adds the perfect touch of Halloween. I love pieces that transition from fall to Halloween. Don’t forget to layer your doormat with a rug! This has been on trend for a little while now, and I’m so in love with the look. It took me forever to find the perfect rug to pair up with my mat and was so happy to find this one – the colours are perfect for the season!

Incorporate natural elements.

I love the natural look of the bushel baskets and I’m so glad I picked these up at a yard sale last summer. I knew these would make for the perfect place to hold my mums! Along with the bushel baskets, I also added some corn stalks along either side of my door. (I’ve already picked these corn stalks up a dozen times as the wind keeps blowing them over… ugh.. but it’s all worth it!). I made sure to take the corn out of the stalks this year, as last year there was a very happily fed squirrel (I swear it’s the same squirrel that also ate my carved pumpkin last year…).

I added these ribbons to both corn stalks which not only helps to hold them all together but also incorporates that natural, farm-house style I was going for.

Use what you have on hand.

A lot of the other decor pieces I have on my front porch I already had on hand. The lanterns, the milk can and the black chair are items that I typically use on my front porch, making them very versatile. Recognize that black chair? It wasn’t always black! I gave it a quick coat of spray paint covering up the previous teal colour it was before. Check out my summer porch to see what it looked like before!

There you have it! My fall porch fully decorated just in time for Thanksgiving next weekend. What do you think? Will you decorate for fall? I hope I gave you some inspiration to decorate!

xoxo,

Amy
